The Soldier And The Girl

She was but just ten years old when he said hello
She looked up to the uniformed man and smiled,
She saw the brave man with a gun on his shoulder
She held the welcoming finger and smiled again.

He was feeling alone, no one in the world.
He had to go fight a war to sacrifice his life
He had no family nor friends, but this little girl.
He saw the innocence in her eyes and said hello

They walked holding hands, not talking but silence
They were thinking but they did not know what.
They were inquisitive, but did not know why
They felt safe but know not where they were headed.

Sitting down by the shore, they looked into the sea
He held her hands and said, "iam going away tomorrow.
"She asked him where the stranger was about to go.
"To a place where I may not return."

He said he did not know who she was
But he'd write letters to her b'cause he had none to.
She promised she'd write back to him.
And they passed the evening talking about life.

Soon the letters came from the battlefield
He told her he was a bit scared but happy he was surviving.
'It's really dangerous, people killing each other-
I watched as my friend being shot and I cried.

'She replied saying she was doing well in school'
I like to sit near the sea with you again,
The waters seem to say your name-
'She sent him a hand drawn teddy bear, he could sleep with.

A month passed by she did not receive any letter from him.
And one day a parcel arrived in her name
She knew it was from him; full of hope she unwrapped it.
It was from him, of course, but did not seem a happy one.

The bag contained letters she worte, and a precious one,
A letter from him thanking her for the hope she gave
'If you are reading this without me, the land I went to
Is the never return land- '

She cried waiting for him by the shore
But he never returned-
She searched for his hand-
But not finding the warmth-

The soldier had long gone-
He had finished his war-
And she was left alone-
And began her war with life-
